Formulas:
Median healing (med) : med = (max + min)/2
Median healing (with crit chance) (cmed): cmed = (med)((1-crit) + 1.5(crit)) or cmed = (med)(1+((.005)(crit)))
Median Healing per second (hps): hps = med/cast time
Median Healing per mana (hpm): hpm = med/mana cost
Average mana cost (with crit chance): ave mana = (mana cost)(1-crit)
1. Flash of Light
a. Overview
Flash of light serves as your staple healing spell because it supplies moderate hps and high hpm with a short cast time of 1.5 seconds. Flash of Light benefits from Blessing of Light, which increases the maximum healing of Flash of Light by 115, and Healing Light, which increases the healing of Flash of Light by 12% (calculated before other modifiers),and also benefits from ~43% of your bonus healing.
b. Rank 6
As you can see, max rank FoL is very mana efficient and delivers enough hps to keep someone alive if they’re taking a moderate amount of damage. However, it isn’t really the best choice as your staple healing spell.
c. Rank 1
I know you’re probably thinking “Rank 1? What the fuck?” But it’s actually A LOT better than you might think it is, if you don’t believe me, look at the facts.
On its own it’s pretty useless as it has very low hps and hpm, but it receives the full +115 maximum healing from blessing of light, which nearly doubles its hps and hpm, which gives it higher hpm than rank 6. It may not look like much at the moment but the mana efficiency gap between rank 1 and 6 actually widens with greater amounts of bonus healing (rank 1 is twice as efficient as rank 6 with ~462 bonus healing). Because of the ridiculous efficiency of rank 1 you can actually regenerate more mana than it takes to use it if your mana regen is high enough. This allows you to heal people while staying at full mana with rank 1, then switch to using rank 6 when you need the higher hps. This tactic allows you to heal for days compared to other healers, for example, I entered the second phase of the Razorgore fight with 100% mana while most other healers were sitting at 50%, and I still ended the fight within the top 3 on the healing meter. If you find that rank 1 doesn’t offer enough hps for you ranks 2 and 3 offer more hps but are less mana efficient than rank 1 (don’t use rank 4 because it’s the least efficient, and rank 5 is just as efficient as rank 6 so you might as well just use rank 6 instead).
2. Holy light
a. Overview
Holy Light serves as your emergency heal because it offers very high hps but it has low hpm, making it unsustainable if you decide to spam it. Holy Light benefits from Blessing of light, giving it an extra 400 maximum healing, and Healing Light, which increases the healing of Holy Light by 12% (calculated before other modifiers), and also benefits from ~71% of your bonus healing.
Because you only should be using Holy Light in emergency situations there is no need to use a lower rank because you want as much hps as possible. The problem with Holy Light is that it has a long cast time of 2.5 second. This makes casting holy light a significant gamble, because while you may be able to nearly fully heal a low health tank there’s no guarantee that your tank will survive for another 2.5 seconds without healing. With that being said, I find that the best time to use Holy Light is when your tank is around 20-30%, if they’re lower than 20% throw a few Flash of Light’s on them before using Holy Light. If you’re in a raid you can avoid having to gamble with Holy Light altogether as other people will most likely try to use their emergency heals on low health tanks, in this case you can just spam flash of light to sustain through the damage the tank is taking until other healers back you up with big heals. Spamming Holy Light can be a good idea if you can anticipate if your tank is going to be taking a lot of damage for an extended period of time, for example when a boss enrages.
3. Holy shock
The only good thing I can say about Holy Shock is that you can use it while moving, other than that it’s god awful. It doesn’t heal for much, it costs a lot of mana, and it has a 30 second cool down.
4. Bonus Healing vs. Spell Crit and Intellect
~27 Intellect = 1% spell crit (1 Int ~= .037% crit)
In order to find out how much crit chance affects your healing we can use the median healing formula with 100 healing (so the answer will be an easy percentage of our original healing) and 1% crit (.01 as a decimal).
(100)((1-.01)+(1.5)(.01)) = 100.5
This means that our total healing has increased by 0.5%. or,
1% crit = 0.5% healing
With this and the earlier assessment we can find how much intellect increases our healing.
(0.5%)/(27 intellect) ~= 0.0185% healing / intellect
or
1 Int ~= 0.0185% healing
So from 1 point of intellect our healing is increased by 0.0185%, so if we start with 100 healing, our healing is effectively 100.0185 (100*1.000185).
If our flash of light heals for 100, and we have 1 point of bonus healing, it increases the amount healed by 0.43 (43% of bonus healing).
If our holy light heals for 100, and we have 1 point of bonus healing, it increases the amount healed by .71 (71% of bonus healing).
This means that bonus healing is ~23 times more effective than intellect for flash of light, and ~38 times more effective for holy light.
