This is a great breakdown of how to value spirit, mp5 and +healing as a resto druid. All thanks to Eleana for breaking this down, original post here www.wow-one.com/forum/topic/10324-most-unusual-guide-for-pre-raid-restor-druid/
1. Spirit contra mp5
If you want to go for high manareg, which is indeed a possible way for a druid, you should aim for high mp5 values but not spirit.
The reason lies within the infight (meaning within the 5 sec rule) manareg formula for druids in 1.12. It is:
=ROUNDDOWN((TotalSpirit/5+15)*0,15+TotalMp5/2,5;0). Or, easier spoken:
Mana per 2 seconds = TotalSpirit/5+15*0,15+TotalMp5/2,5 (the factor is 0,3 with 3/8 t2)
The same formula with a factor of 1 gives the manareg out of 5 sec; the factor 5 gives the innervate value.
Therefore, your spirit value of 510 leads to a very poor reg of 17 mana in fight, 117 out of fight and 585 on innervate. The last 2 values are impressive and not even achieved by an aq40 druid, but those will have around 60 manareg infight with around 1000 +heal, over 100 manareg out of fight and over 400 manareg on innervate. But you were talking about spamming non stop, which leads us to 17 mana in fight only and innervate every 6 min.
Now let us have a look on the relation between spirit and mp5 according to the formula:
You need 33,33 spirit or 2,5 mp5 to achieve 1 manareg per 2 sec in vanilla. Therefore 1 mp5 is worth 13,33 spirit (or 6,67 with t2).
Only 37 mp5 will grant you the same amount of 17 mana in fight comming from your 510 spirit (admitting that your out of fight and innervate is very low).
2. Downranking
If you want to heal efficiently, you need to consider the concept of downranking, too.
Let us take a look on the named aq40 druid with 1k +heal for example. His or her healing touch rank 3 will heal for around 1030 uncrit, coasting around 100 mana, depending on specc. A rank 3 healing touch without any +heal, as u suggest, heals for around 240 uncrit. The first healing touch close to the aq40 druid's rank 3 will be your healing touch rank 6 with a heal of around 900 uncrit, but for a cost of around 300 mana, i.e. 3 times more. To heal equally effective only in healing per mana, you would need a mana reg of around 200 in fight, which is just fictional. This is put simple and neglects healing per second, because mana ticks every 2 seconds, while healing touch rank 3 has a casttime of 2 seconds and rank 6 needs 3 seconds.
Add the aq40 druid's manareg values from above to the scenario and you see the tremendous difference. If you take the values from a bis pre raid druid with around 650 +heal, the numbers will be still impressive; i only used endgame gear to illustrate it better.
3. Healing per mana contra healing per second
As healer, at least in raids, two things are important. Your mana effeciency, meaning how much you can heal for the mana spent, displayed as healing per mana; and your healing efficency, meaning how much you can heal for the time spent, displayed as healing per second.
First comes from manareg and down ranking, second from +heal and choosing the right rank of healing touch. It does not help much if you are on full mana but your healing touches and rejuvenations are not enough to keep the tank and raid healed, because you lack +heal. Standing around waiting for high out of fight mana ticks is usless too, as you do not heal in that time. On the other hand, a super healing touch is useless if you are out of mana.
Therefore, balance is key, depending on your +heal and manareg. Most raid druids use one low healing touch (rank 2, 3 or 4), one mid rank (rank 6, 7 or 8) and the max rank (as instant or on cd with esc in heavy damage fights), combined with max rank rejuvenation to achieve an effective heal. Sometimes they spread in a regrowth, if the extra hot is needed.
